trip to volubilis
1 day trip from Fes
Pick-up after breakfast at your hotel. We will set off towards Walili (Volubilis), an ancient Roman city, located at the foot of Zerhoun Mountain, and also very close to Moulay Idriss, Morocco’s holy city.
The archaeological site of Volubilis is probably one of the best-preserved sites in northern Africa. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997 by UNESCO.
According to some historians, this town was founded by the Carthaginians sometime around the 3rd century BC. c.
Their economic prosperity was based in the trade and production of oil, wheat and wild animals that were sold to the circus. That’s why Volubilis became the leading town in the inland area of the province, and a very important administrative centre, home to the province’s prosecutors.
This Roman archaeological site, that spreads over 20 ha, contains a myriad of archaeological remains and monuments. This is quite astonishing if we consider that just half of it has been excavated for now. The most important remains are the Forum, a basilica from the II century and the Capitoline Temple, located on the highest point of the city, as Roman tradition requires; and the Arch of Caracalla.
After the visit, we will drive to Meknes, the smallest of all the Imperial cities. We will visit the fortified medina, the astonishing Bab Masour gate, the el-Hedim Square and the Sultan Moulay Ismail’s stables and barns in the city that carries the name of this Great Sultan of the Alaouite Dynasty. After the visit, we will drive to Fez. Drop-off at the agreed place. End of our services.
